Seminars
On Thursday 5th of August, between 13.30 – 16.00, there will be 5 parallel seminars where also delegates at the IOGT Congress will get an opportunity to participate. These are

* Mode of operation and influence of the alcohol industry. The multinational alcohol industry has defined developing countries as their new and promising markets. As part of this they are actively trying to influence alcohol policy formulation at both the national and international level. This seminar will describe the actions of the drinks industry in Africa, Asia and towards the WHO and discuss how NGOs can counter-balance the industry.

* Rehabilitation work in IOGT. We will look at how rehabilitation work is being done in different countries. Is there a special character to rehabilitation when IOGT-organizations do it?

* Sobriety - an idea for the future? Half of the world’s adult population is not drinking alcohol. How does this influence the volume of alcohol-related harm? The reasons for abstinence are many; religious, cultural, political. This sober lifestyle is, however, under heavy pressure from the alcohol industry’s marketing strategies and Western values. How can abstinence be promoted more effectively as one of several roads leading to reduced alcohol-related harm?

* Harm to others. A large share of the alcohol-related harm is inflicted on persons around the drinker, not on the drinkers themselves. This is the situation in all cultures and in all corners of the world. Drinking is a risk factor for violent behavior, and in particular for domestic and gender-based violence. Documentation now also exists for the connection between alcohol consumption and HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis. This workshop will present and discuss such documentation.

* Child rights and alcohol and drug problems. Children all over the world are severely influenced by the drinking habits of adults, in particular by the drinking of fathers; neglect, violence, sexual abuse, poverty etc. This conflicts with the Declaration of the Rights of the Child, which says that children have the right to be protected from such negative influences. Many children also suffer from their own drinking or drug abuse.  How can IOGT, Active and member organizations work more effectively with this issue? How can other child rights organizations be involved?
