Global Strategy support alert 2009/18/12
Country-level support needed now for the Global Strategy to reduce the harmful use of Alcohol
Please be informed that the December 3, 2009 Draft of the WHO Global Strategy to Reduce Harmful Use of Alcohol is now available at the WHO web-site.
The document consist of three parts: The report by the secretariat, including a draft resolution for consideration by the WHO Executive Board; Annex 1 – the draft strategy itself; Annex 2 – a two-page summary of the evidence for the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of interventions. In addition, there is also a bibliography of evidence on harmful use of alcohol published as a separate document on the same web page.
In January 2010 (18-23 January), the Executive Board of the World Health Organization will consider the draft strategy.
Please find attached the Global Alcohol Policy Alliance (GAPA) – where IOGT International is a member - response to the Draft Global Strategy and an accompanying Action Alert.
IOGT International strongly supports the December 3, 2009 Draft Global Strategy (Doc. EB126/13) and recommends it to the Executive Board and Member States for approval. Although some of its sections should be improved and strengthened we believe that the Strategy effectively addresses issues that will be critical in public health efforts to reduce the toll of alcohol throughout the world.
In the attached document the Global Alcohol Policy Alliance (GAPA) has outlined it’s concerns and they are related to alcohol marketing issues and securing that appropriate roles are identified for different parties. IOGT International fully support GAPAs concerns.
We kindly ask you to act on this alert as a minimum in two ways:
- Write a letter to your health minister/WHO Executive Board Member.
- Contribute to mobilizing other partners in your network, nationally or internationally to also act now.
IOGT International,
Sven-Olov Carlsson
International President
