Setting Women Free through Alcohol Policy

On IWD I look at the culture behind gender-based differences, gender-based violence and why women still are less than men. And on IWD I look into what can be done to change this and give women the freedom and opportunities they deserve. Somewhere in this text you’ll find that: “First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you – and then you win.”

Making a difference for kids

This week is the week of Children of Alcoholics (CoA).
Alcohol in a family has an immense impact on the kids’ childhood and their future life. It leads to dysfunctional family where the substance comes first before all the family members; an unsafe family environment that has huge impact on kids’ development; limiting social life for the kids with their peers; lack of attention and affection; low self-esteem; worsen economical situation; limited perspectives for future education. The children of alcoholics very often tend to develop alcohol dependency themselves and reproduce the problem.
Despite all the negative consequences, the CoA usually need to deal with the problem on their own.

Season Greetings and Future Challenges

Dear Members, partners and supporters, the IOGT International World Congress in 2010 clearly pointed out the importance for IOGT International to support and build an effective network  and bring together organizations, institutions and foundations from all over the world for international fellowship and furtherance of the temperance platform. This work has had the highest priority during 2011.

The  reason  for that is the growing pressure on people and communities to start using alcohol – this is particularly relevant in developing societies, and the need to defend an alcohol free life.

Many children are also victims of the consequences of alcohol use by others, especially family members, resulting in family breakdown, economic and emotional poverty, neglect, abuse, violence and lost opportunities.

The victims were mostly labourers, rickshaw-pullers and hawkers. A 12-year old girl is among the victims which is another
concern for all of us. Two-thirds of the alcohol consumed in India is illegal hooch.

How to deal with Alcohol Problems in Malaysia?

The last three years IOGT International has been involved with the alcohol situation in Malaysia. It all started with a joint workshop in Kuching, Sarawak in 2008, where IOGT International together with IFNGO co-organized a workshop with delegates mostly from the South- and Southeast Asia regions.

Next week I will attend the 24th IFNGO World Conference which is being held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
