Setting Women Free through Alcohol Policy

On IWD I look at the culture behind gender-based differences, gender-based violence and why women still are less than men. And on IWD I look into what can be done to change this and give women the freedom and opportunities they deserve. Somewhere in this text you’ll find that: “First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you – and then you win.”

Closing Earlier = More Freedom

So the biggest political question in my hometown Gothenburg right now is if the bars and night clubs should be allowed to serve alcohol after 3 AM or not. All the scientific evidence, the police, the municipality officials, hospitals and people living close to pubs and bars are in favour of earlier closing hours. But strangely some youth associations of political parties stand together across the boundaries of different idelogical alliances and oppose the move to close Gothenburg pubs 2 hours earlier.

Making a difference for kids

This week is the week of Children of Alcoholics (CoA).
Alcohol in a family has an immense impact on the kids’ childhood and their future life. It leads to dysfunctional family where the substance comes first before all the family members; an unsafe family environment that has huge impact on kids’ development; limiting social life for the kids with their peers; lack of attention and affection; low self-esteem; worsen economical situation; limited perspectives for future education. The children of alcoholics very often tend to develop alcohol dependency themselves and reproduce the problem.
Despite all the negative consequences, the CoA usually need to deal with the problem on their own.

Live from GAPC

I am participating in the Global Alcohol Policy Conference – GAPC – 13-15 February 2012 in Nonthaburi, Thailand.
About 900 people are registered and our Thai hosts have done a marvelous job organising so far.
The Conference is jointly organized by the Thai Ministry of Public Health, the World Health Organization, the Global Alcohol Policy Alliance (GAPA) and the Thai Health Promotion Foundation and is co-sponsered by among others IOGT International.

On Tuesday 14 February I will be speaking in a session on the topic “Put Alcohol on Political Agenda”.

The “WOW” Experience!

Every now and then, we are confronted with a new situation that is so outstanding and/or unusual that it engenders an actual “WOW” response on your part.

I had such an experience last March when I visited the Great Wall of China. This was such an amazing experience that it
deserved a full blown “WOW!”
